Interview with Sister William Adele

I interviewed Sister William on vocation. She loves being a Sister of Saint Joseph (SSJ) because she thinks that’s what God wants her to do. She thought about becoming a Sister during grade school because there were many Sisters teaching in her school. She said that the Sisters really inspired her to go into the religious order. Her parents reacted fine, but they wanted her to work a year after high school so she could think about it more. I know you may not wonder this but I do. The difference between a nun and a Sister is that people think nuns never come out of their cloister and they’re very silent. Sisters are much more active. It was hard for her to make the decision because you give a lot of things up. She said if she wasn’t a Sister, she would probably be married and be a mother. She has no date in her mind of when she’ll retire and she hasn’t thought about what to be after that. She was principal of two schools before St. Luke’s. They were Visitation in Philadelphia and St. Matthew in Conshohocken. I felt like after I interviewed her, I knew her a lot better!

January Saint of the Month

St. John Neumann St. John Neumann was born on March 28, 1811 in Bohemia. Neumann was ordained a priest in 1836 by a bishop from New York. He was one of only 36 priests to serve for 200,000 Catholics in New York. He became a member of the Redemptorists, an order of priests who served in Pittsburgh and Baltimore. In 1852, John Neumann was ordained Bishop of Philadelphia by Pope Pius IX. He was the first to establish a Diocesan Catholic School system. He also founded the 40 Hours Devotion. St. John died on January 5, 1860. He was declared a saint in 1977. His feast day is on January 5.

Martin Luther King Day Service

It is time again for the Martin Luther King Day Service Project. This year it is Monday, January 15, 2007 from 10 – 11 a.m. Any CYO members in 5th grade and up gather in Father Fitzpatrick Hall to make casseroles for St. John’s Hospice. If you are interested, call Mrs. Corcoran to be assigned a food item to bring. Last year, 31 CYO members participated and made 20 casseroles. St. John’s Hospice provides the homeless in Philadelphia pre-cooked meals. St. Luke’s Parish donates frozen casseroles regularly to the organization. The CYO is dedicated to helping those less fortunate. This Service Project is a lot of fun and we hope that a lot of members sign up.
