Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Third Grade. I hope this will be a new and exciting year for all. Please check this sight often for upcoming events.

Information For 101

Homework:  Homework will be written in Homework book each night. Please sign the book each night after you have checked for completion. If there are any questions about the work, please write the note in the subject book not the assignment book.

Projects:  Most of our projects are done in school. They most often go along with the things we are doing in a particular subject area. Students are graded on information, writing, layout, creativity, artwork and above all neatness.

ILA (English, Reading, Spelling, Writing and Penmanship):  All of these subjects work together and are taught together. Yor child will be doing prose and poetry writing throughout the year. These will be kept in a folder and be sent home for you to see several times. It is extremely important that your child read every night for at least 15 minutes. Also we will be doing book reports several times this year.

Religion:   This is a very important time in your child's life. The thrust of the beginning of this year will be the preparation for and reception of First Eucharist. We will also cover the topics of the life of Jesus and Mary, the sacraments, the commandments, feast days of Mary and the Saints, the Mass and our life as good Christians. A reminder that the third grade class will be the readers and preparers of the first Friday Mass in December.

Math:  As you have seen, we have a new math series. We will be working on the review of addition and subtraction with and without renaming as well as time, money any geometry. A large part of our time will be spent on multiplication and division. It is extremely important that your child memorize multiplication facts as they will be tested on them on a regular basis.

Social Studies: Your child will now be responsible for material taught in this area. We will be studying about the world through the use of maps. We will also cover many interesting topics such as presidents, communities and their needs, family heritage, the history of our country and the Amish just to name a few. They will need to study as we go along as they will be tested in these areas.

Science:  Your child has been introduced to the scientific method and we will do many experiments throughout the year. We will also cover such things as the sun and the planets, the water cycle, life cycles of insects and animals, the food chain and nutrition. Tests will also be given in this subject. We hope to plant the seeds for future scientists.

I hope this page has been helpful. Above all please remember that studying is many times a big part of one night's homework. Please feel free to e-mail me at any time and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you and God bless,
Mrs. Sumner
