 Wellness at Saint Luke School

Saint Luke School has joined the Archdiocese in a Wellness program targeting nutrition and physical activity. Eating well is an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle.  Kids who eat healthfully do better in school. Children who overload on too much sugar, simple carbs and junk food cannot concentrate or focus as well as when they are sustained with higher fiber, more complex carbs and lower fat protein choices (eg. turkey, chicken, beans).

For breakfast, there are good cereal choices - look for cereal with less than 6 grams of sugar and more fiber (3 grams or more) along with skim milk.  If you're trying to change your family's preference for whole milk, start with lower fat milk to start.   Some other good combinations for the most important meal of the day could be:

            Oatmeal topped with fruit
Whole grain bread or bagels with peanut butter, egg or low fat cheese
            A breakfast burrito or pita
Whole grain pancakes or waffles with bananas or berries

Some snack suggestions:
Cut up veggies and low fat diip
Apples, bananas, etc. with peanut butter
Hummus with whole grain crackers or raw vegetables
            Low fat yogurt
            Popcorn

Remember, water is still the best beverage and there's hidden sugar in many foods!

As we discuss in gym classes, part of a healthy lifestyle is physical activity - a target of 60 minutes of physical activity a day.  Get outside and play!
