SLATS (Saint Luke Apprentice Technology Specialists) program

This is a brand new program open to both 7th and 8th grade students. There is an application process in which the applicants state reasons why they would be a good candidate for the program. All students in the program will be trained to do various tasks on the classroom computers. They will get a checklist of items of common issues that occur when a teacher reports a computer problem. Each issue will contain various steps to perform in order to determine what the actual problem is. The most common problems will have solutions for the SLATS team to try. If the problem still exists after the checklist is complete the SLAT team member will report this to the technology teacher who will take various steps to have the problem corrected.
The students will check to see that virus protection and Windows updates are complete and current. Some of them may be asked to set up the projector and laptop for use by a classroom teacher or the principal. Other tasks may be to install a network printer or computer program on the classroom computers. The students who apply and become official SLATS team members will gain a great deal of knowledge in these areas. The only real way to learn about computers is to do it yourself and this will give these students that "hands on" experience. The first set of team members will help train new members for next year's team.
We are very excited about this program and eager to get it started!
